What Is on the Nightstand This September

Three novels, one memoir, and a cookbook I am reading cover to cover like a novel. The current state of the pile, honestly reported.

What Is on the Nightstand This September

The nightstand pile has reached structural concern levels again, which means it is time for an honest accounting. Here is what I am actually reading — not what I bought with good intentions and have been using as a coaster.

The novel I cannot put down

I am a hundred pages into a doorstop of a family saga that follows four sisters running a failing restaurant, and it is doing that thing where I keep reading "one more chapter" until midnight on a work night. The food writing alone — a whole chapter built around a burnt béchamel as a metaphor for a marriage — is worth the cover price.

The memoir I am rationing

A chef’s memoir I am deliberately reading slowly, one essay per morning with coffee, because finishing it feels like the end of a good conversation. It is funny and sharp and occasionally devastating, sometimes within the same paragraph.

The cookbook I am reading like a novel

Yes, I read cookbooks in bed. The headnotes in this one are better written than most short stories — every recipe comes with a small essay about where it came from and who taught it to the author. I have cooked exactly two things from it and read all four hundred pages.

“A nightstand pile is not a to-do list. It is a mood board for the person you might feel like being next week.”
